SkillsUSA Celebrates Skilled Trades at ‘Signing Day’

The future of the skilled trades was on full display at the first-ever SkillsUSA Signing Day at Breithaupt Career and Tech Center in Detroit.

Breithaupt mirrored the tradition usually reserved for star athletes by celebrating students specializing in skilled trades. Senior students proudly announced their next steps and signed their names, committing to working in high-demand trades such as automotive, welding, and design.

The event highlighted the growing importance of skilled trade careers and the dedication students have shown in preparing for their futures. Much like a college signing day for athletes, the ceremony recognized hard work, perseverance, and the bright opportunities waiting ahead for these students.

  • Among these career path opportunities, New Ford Tech offers post-secondary education programs for high school students or those recently graduated to continue their endeavors in a service technician career. Thus, expanding and creating a foundation for a Ford Technician pipeline, one student tech at a time.

Among the students recognized is Da’Juan Groves, an automotive student whose passion for the automotive industry was inspired by his grandmother, whom he often saw welding and working on automobiles. Her encouragement and support helped shape his desire to pursue a career where he can make a meaningful impact on others.

Groves shared that one of his biggest motivations is giving back to his community by helping people who cannot afford expensive vehicle repairs. He hopes to assist those who rely on their vehicles by helping them get their cars back up and running, rather than being forced to take public transportation when challenges arise.

His story reflects the heart behind skilled trades careers: using talent, knowledge, and hard work to serve others and strengthen communities. For those who want to give back similarly, consider enrolling in a New Ford Tech program and launch a career in automotive service.

The value of a technical education and career is found in the demand and advancement opportunities available, commit to a career in the skilled trades and secure a viable career path forward.
